Living Debt Free By The Word
By Nicholas T. Simonic, CPA, MACC
Part One

Living Debt Free, By the Word.” What does that phrase say to you?  Sometimes people will read a phrase or a sentence and focus on one word.  For instance, if I tell a tax client, “The government may owe you a $3,000 refund, if you only have so much income,” the client only remembers the words “government,” “owes,” “you,” and “$3,000.” The client disregards the rest of the information that I provided.  So, the phrase “Living Debt Free, By the Word” should not cause you to focus on the word “debt.”  The key words in this phrase are Living Debt Free, By the Word.  All of these words apply together.

Is it possible for a Christian family to live debt-free in our society?  Absolutely!  God has intended for you to live debt-free according to His Word.  This series of articles is intended to provide a summary of information for you that will change your life.  If you follow my lead, in the coming weeks I will direct you into a way of life that God intended for all of His children to live financially, but few know about, let alone believe possible for them personally.  I have been mentoring my son in our accounting practice.  I have told him, “You cannot lead where you have not gone.”  Believe me folks; I can lead if you are willing to listen.

In war, they say that knowing your enemy is half of the battle.  In this article we are going to share some realities so that you realize that even in your finances, the enemy is not who or what you thought it was.  I will also share with you some background statistics to help me convey to you why it is important for you, as a child of the King, to live a debt-free lifestyle.  First, 62% of the marriages in the United States end up in divorce in the first seven years.  That sad statistic, unfortunately, also includes Christian marriages.  While we are on the subject, the reason for the divorce statistic is again our society.  Our society gives us “permission” to divorce with little or no repercussions.  So too, our society allows us to get into to debt over our heads, and sometimes file bankruptcy as a way out.

Next, in the early 1900’s 2% of the population had mortgages.  Today, only 2% don’t!  Does this mean that only the wealthy people do not have mortgages?  No.  This means that people who establish solid financial principles in their lives eliminate the debt.

Another sad bit of information is that today the average young couple has over $100,000 worth of debt after only two years of marriage.  If you consider yourself to be one or more of these statistics, I have good news: your life can change!  There is a way to establish a solid financial foundation in your life and move on to accomplishing God’s will in your finances for you and your family.

Remember, this teaching is like a painting.  Due to space constraints, we can only share a piece at a time.  A painting starts with a sketch.  But the picture gets clearer with each stroke.  Print each article and save it in a file, so in time you will have the whole picture.

“Beloved, I wish above all things that you prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers”  (3 John 2)“Living Debt Free, By the Word.” What does that phrase say to you?  Sometimes people will read a phrase or a sentence and focus on one word.  For instance, if I tell a tax client, “The government may owe you a $3,000 refund, if you only have so much income,” the client only remembers the words “government,” “owes,” “you,” and “$3,000.” The client disregards the rest of the information that I provided.  So, the phrase “Living Debt Free, By the Word” should not cause you to focus on the word “debt.”  The key words in this phrase are Living Debt Free, By the Word.  All of these words apply together.
